Walking in Community

We all long to be connected and belong. We desire to do life with people and have company when things get hard, as well as when we have something to celebrate. Naturally, we seek out people who are like us or with whom we have much in common. It matters to us that we share similar values and interests. We experience community there. But there is something better, and we instinctively know this.

A community that transcends our differences, perspectives, or preferences, now that’s a community that feels more fail-proof. Jesus is at the center of the Christian community. He does what no other community can do, unite people who are likely never going to choose to be together and have every reason to stay apart. He draws to this diverse group of people, even those who seek to isolate themselves.

The Christian faith is not to be lived in isolation. To make it a private experience would be like playing a group sport by yourself. But, considering how diverse are the people whose lives are being transformed by the love of Christ, it is a wonder that Jesus went out of his way to call us to be united in Him. Today’s passage shows his intention, that we would be o-n-e (uno!) as He, the Father, and Holy Spirit are one. Wow. How could this happen?

Only Jesus!

“I have given them the glory you have given me, so that they may be one as we are one. John 17:22”

Q. In what way can you give permission to someone you trust to speak into your journey of faith, hold you accountable, and encourage you when you’re down? Identify one person you want to start supporting as they walk their journey of faith.
