3 Reasons Blended Families Are a Blessing; Let’s Encourage Them!
Jim and I have a blended family of five children and ten grandchildren. We have so many social categories (step, half, adopted) that we affectionally call ourselves the “Franklin Smoothie Family.” I am so grateful for all the love and what we have learned together.
Far from being second-class, blended families are a beautiful blessing to society. Whether or not you’re part of a blended family, here are three reasons why I believe blended families are a powerful reflection of God’s grace and why they deserve our support and understanding:
Diversity and Growth: Blended families teach us about diversity, patience, and understanding. They often have a larger extended family, including "bonus" parents, siblings, and grandparents. The different backgrounds and traditions within the family create opportunities for growth and deeper connections. This creates a broader support network for children, giving them access to more mentors, caretakers, and love, which benefits society by fostering stronger, more well-rounded individuals.
Strength in Unity: Coming together as a blended family requires intentionality, which can lead to strong bonds. Siblings and stepparents develop skills in adjusting to new roles, expectations, and dynamics, which are essential traits in today's fast-changing world. These families teach children (and adults) resilience, emotional intelligence, and the ability to embrace change.
A Picture of Redemption: Blended families are a reminder that God creates new beauty from brokenness. The journey, while challenging, reflects God’s power to restore and redeem. By nature, these families bring together people with different histories who must work through misunderstandings, conflicting traditions, and even past hurts. The process teaches profound lessons about forgiveness, empathy, and the power of grace—qualities that ripple into the wider community.
A blended family's journey requires perseverance. Even in complexity, this legacy of sticking together powerfully messages children and society about the beauty and endurance of sacrificial love.
Even if you’re not in a blended family, your support can make a significant difference. Take a moment to encourage someone who is! A simple message of support can make a big difference. Let them know their family is a powerful blessing, and God is with them in their unique journey.
