Serving in Community

There is power in numbers. Gather a few people together to accomplish a task, and the synergy of the team can help you do more together than you could individually. This works in our faith journey as well.

Jesus came to do a very specific task, "For the joy set before him [Jesus] endured the cross, scorning its shame…" Hebrews 12:2. Yet Jesus did not work alone.

While the task was his, Jesus gathered his disciples from the beginning of his ministry, and (other than praying) he did nothing without them being present. He sent them to do the very things he was doing and empowered them with his authority. He called them to pray for even more workers. He commissioned them (and us) to work together to "make disciples." Paul called the believers "God's chosen ones" and reminded us of the privilege of serving Christ, the calling to do his work.

Sometimes, we think that serving God on our own is better. We have control. We do it at our pace, our timing, and our way. Sure, that will work. If anyone could do that, it would be Jesus, for He is God, but he did not. He knew that when we collaborate with others, oh so much more can happen.

What has been your experience serving others in the way Jesus loved? How did today's devotional encourage you to continue to serve him and his people?

I hope you enjoyed this week's devotional! If you haven't yet, sign up for our email list, so you never miss a video.
